Problems In Intercultural Communication

Humans have been communicating since four million years. On the other hand, the birth of culture is estimated to have taken place about 35,000 years ago. Today, both culture and communication have evolved considerably and have become interdependent of one another, to the point that communication is considered to be a product of culture. Thus, our own culture has a deep impact on our thoughts and behaviors. Since each culture has its distinct aspects, intercultural communication can be the cause of conflict and disorder. There are three main issues which are at the root of the problem of intercultural miscommunication : language as a barrier, cultural diversity and ethnocentrism. I will analyze…show more content…

Among the most important concepts to emerge are those relating to dialects and language standards. Sociolinguists have documented the presence of dialects in every language. These dialects, all of which are legitimate, are associated with educational, economic, social and historical conditions. Hence, even if an individual scrupulously studies all the possible dictionaries of a random language, he would still be somewhat of a stranger to that language since he is unaware of all the dialectal changes.

In addition to differences in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammatical structures among cultural groups, variations also exist in the rules for general discourse in oral communication, covering such specific acts as narratives and conversation. In communicating with one another, teachers and students naturally will follow the assumptions and rules governing discourse within their respective cultures. Discourse rules govern such aspects of communication as: opening or closing conversations; taking turns during conversations; interrupting; using silence as a communicative device; interjecting humor at appropriate times and using nonverbal behavior. Discuss the important issues in understanding cross-cultural relations, with particular emphasis on the requirements of effective leadership. Be sure and relate your discussion to one or more of the theories described in your readings.
In order to talk about the issues on any subject you must first understand the subject itself. When referring to anything that has to do with culture and relations, you must first understand what constitutes a relationship. A relationship is defined as “a state of affairs existing between those having relations or dealings” (Merriam-Webster, 2014) or “a connection, association, or involvement.” (Dictionary.com, 2014) For example, working in a building with a diverse community of different cultural backgrounds it is very important that we as effective leaders get employees to build one to one connection, understanding trust with each other, which are powerful enough to create change in production and team achieving goals.
• Trust is the key to any environment. Trust tells us that we can count on someone to be there. If you do not trust your coworkers how can you work with them. For example, when two employees are working on an assignment together they have to trust that each person will not give up when it gets hard. When the going gets tough you have to trust they will pick up the slack.
Just one conversation constitutes as having a relationship with a person. It does not matter if you call it a business relationship, personal relationship, or just an associate; it is all considered to be a relationship.
Culture is defined as “the integrated pattern of knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations.” (Merriam-Webster, 2014) These traditions that are passed down makes us who we are, they define the makeup of our brain. Our brains are hardwired to think a certain way based on how we grew up and what we were taught in our lifetime. Culture is a funny thing; in the sense that when you are in the presence of someone different, you do not know how offensive you are being with them because you are not aware of their traditions.
Being culturally aware of your surroundings is like building a good relationship. To develop any relationship you have to be aware of your surroundings, especially those that have cultural differences. Think of it as a flower, if you give it love, nourishment, and take care of it then it will blossom into something beautiful. If you fail to take care of the flower, then it will slowly die off and wither away. Paying attention to the little details of an individual could make or break a company; being aware of what a person represents is a big issue to anyone. In order to have a good professional relationship with anyone you must understand and respect them.
