Essay About Couponing

With the current financial climate, saving money is higher on all our minds and has become an absolute necessity for some people.

When people think of money saving, they think of cutting back or reusing your gone off bananas for a banana cake, saving a few pence.

My way of saving is more rewarding and you can actually see the results in your bank account in no time at all!

Supermarket coupons are becoming increasingly available in this day and age - even in the UK.

I first watched the US TV show “Extreme Couponing” a year and a half ago.

After seeing them save thousands of dollars each time they shopped I was inspired to start saving as much as I could with coupons.

The pence turned to pounds and the savings added up as time went on.

Cut your supermarket bill

In my first year of couponing, I saved nearly £2,000. That gave us the opportunity to pay off bills and go on two holidays abroad - and plenty of motivation to keep going with couponing for years to come.

Some of my biggest personal savings have been a £105 shop for just £1.62, an £85 shop for just 50p and a £50 shop that not only did I get for free, I got a £1.25 price promise coupon back which meant I actually profited!

And this Christmas I did a charity shop which got £600 of products for 4p - you may have seen it in the Mirror last week.

I believe that everyone can save money using coupons so here are my top 10 tips.

Supermarket deals

1. Organisation is key

Throwing away coupons, finding expired coupons and forgetting coupons are the things you want to avoid doing. Make sure you keep all of your coupons in one place so you don’t lose them and remember to pick them up before you go shopping!

2. Free in-store magazines

Most of the major supermarkets have free in-store magazines that have coupons in them. As they are free, pick up more than one. If the coupons are useful to you, you can get the items at a discounted price every week you shop.

3. Your opinion counts

Manufacturers and brands love feedback. Whether it is your favourite product or there is a tiny hole in the side of the packaging, let people know! You are likely to be rewarded with coupons.

4. Online couponing

Coupons are all over the web. Joining company Facebook pages, checking brand websites and signing up to newsletters can put lots of coupons at your disposal.

5. Store loyalty isn’t always best

Shopping in one store is not always the best way to go. Looking around for sales to match your coupons is the best way to save bigger. If you wait for the product you have to go on sale, then you save more. These sales vary in different supermarkets so if it is cheap elsewhere, go there!

6. Be vigilant

Products sometimes have coupons attached to them in the supermarket. Make sure you have your eye out for them!

7. You don't have to spend them all at once

Supermarket offers usually change every week and a lot of coupons last for a month or more, so it is worth hanging onto your coupons for the best deals saving you even more money.

8. Try Wombling

Some non-frugal people throw away their coupons or leave them on the floor around supermarkets. You would probably pick up a £5 note right? So why not pick up a £5 off a £40 spend coupon!

9. Bigger bottles are not always the best

Extra big 'value' products are not always the cheapest options, especially if you have coupons. It is always worth checking this as it may be better value to buy two smaller products with your coupons.

10. Stockpile to save

Don't be embarrassed to buy multiple non perishable products when they are on offer and you have a coupon. These items won't go off so you can keep them for a while and it's great to know you have spares around.
