COURSE DETAILS

ENT 101: Seminars in Entrepreneurship Awareness and Motivation(2 units Compulsory)

The seminars would create awareness among students that entrepreneurship could provide a viable alternative career option. The seminars would also highlight the merits of such options. In addition to that, the seminars would trigger students to engage in enduring goal-oriented behaviours aimed at deriving psychological and economic satisfactions in pursuing entrepreneurship activities.

Module 1: Seminar on principles of success in business

The competencies one needs to be successful can be learned. Business success is predicated on the extent to which an individual applies the principles of competencies to managing a business venture. This motivational seminar is aimed at giving students a head-start in their quest for success in business.

Module 2: Seminar on how to develop entrepreneurial mindset

Most people are not successful in business because they are ill-focused. The ability to develop an appropriate entrepreneurial mindset is a key to business success. This module would help students cultivate the attitudes and tenacity of a successful entrepreneur.

Module 3: Seminar on creative thinking and ideation

Creative thinking skill is a hallmark of entrepreneurship. It is basically the process of generating new ideas to solve a problem. This training seminar is designed to teach students the process of generating new ideas and engaging in creative thinking using practical creativity techniques to solving problems. During the idea generation seminars students would go through a variety of brainstorming techniques and exercises that are designed to ignite creative thinking about new business ideas or how to solve a specific problem.
The speaker would ensure that the brainstorming exercises are entertaining and instructive. The idea generation exercises would be interesting for students who walk into the seminar without a concrete business idea. For those with concrete business ideas, it would be an opportunity to refine, modify, or test their initial ideas.

Enthusiasm may not be enough to sustain a business. This is because an individual may be overwhelmed by his/ her passion, which may make him/ her oblivious of some potential downsides of the business idea. Before launching a business, one needs to conduct a reality check on the business and ensure that the other components of the business idea that guarantee business success are present. In this module, students would be guided on how to effectively turn their talents and passions into profit.

ENT 102: Workshops on Basic Entrepreneurship Skills

(2 units Compulsory)

These workshops would focus on management skills that are required of an entrepreneur before he/she starts a business. During the workshops, students would be exposed to, and practically participate in, business management-related issues.

Module 1: Workshop on economic and legal structures of business

Businesses are built on legal and economic frameworks. The form of business usually determines the economic and legal frameworks on which all the parties involved in the business predicate and structure their relationships and goals. This module will give participants a better understanding of how profits and losses are shared and where legal liabilities rest.

Module 2: Workshop on financial literacy and budgeting

The basic issue in business success is how to build a realistic financial plan that identifies how to spend and make money. Entrepreneurs must know how to keep records effectively, justify every penny spent, and spontaneously spot profit opportunities. This module is designed to equip students with the financial literacy required for building a stable and successful venture.

Module 3: Workshop on product and product development

The nucleus of a business comprises a passionate and visionary entrepreneur, who conceives, drives, and develops an idea in order to meet human needs. Product development is not only about the product; it is also about the process, the customers’ involvement and input in the process as well as when to invest and how much to invest in research and development. This module is designed to expose students to product development strategies and cycle.

Module 4: Workshop on marketing and sales management

Marketing information and sales management are important parts of a business. This module would expose students to the techniques of collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and reviewing marketing and sales data for business purposes. This is a highly interactive module that would employ group dynamics in workshop assignments on current marketing and sales challenges. This module will not only help the students develop basic marketing and sales knowledge as an entrepreneur but also serves as a general tutorial for young business owners.

A business that begins with one person would eventually need extra hands in order to grow or when it grows. Growing a business requires that other individuals are brought into the business. Building an effective business team is predicated on effective and efficient selection criteria and adequate team management strategies. This module will help the students understand and take advantage of the different selection criteria and team management strategies as well as how to leverage on the team’s potential.

Module 6: Workshop on information & telecommunication technology (ICT) and business development

Majority of small scale businesses in Nigeria are yet to fully exploit the potentials of ICT in business. This module would expose the students to the connection between ICT and business development.

ENT 201: Workshops and Practicum on Business and Business Plan(2 units Compulsory)

These workshops would guide students to conceive, prepare, and develop a business and business plan. Students would, at the end of these workshops, be able to answer the following questions that would enhance their ability to prepare and develop an excellent business plan. What is the nature of the business? Do the entrepreneurs have the required competencies and qualifications for the business? What would the business contribute to local and national economies? What are the marketing and sales plans of the business? How would the production process of the product or service be managed? What is the financial plan of the business? How would the business be managed?

Module 1: Workshop on how to source for fund

Start-up capital is important for every business. There is no one-size-fits-all method to determining start-up capital needs or how to raise capital for a business venture. This is because every business has unique capital requirement. This module will expose students to creative and alternative ways of raising capital for their business aside the conventional ways.

Module 2: Workshop on how to attract investors

A new business needs good investors who are willing to provide funds to help create products, buy equipment, or hire employees. Investors are looking for entrepreneurs who can articulate their ideas in a business plan. In spite of the volume of information a business plan may have, there are many other things required by the prospective investors that are often overlooked. This module would provide practical tips, suggestions, and information on how best to approach potential investors.

Module 3: Workshop on how to prepare and present a business plan

At the end of this module, every student would have a better understanding of the content and format of a business plan. This module would also help students fine-tune their knowledge in the art and science of business planning and presentation.

7.0: TRANSITION FROM THE 24-COURSE PROGRAMME TO THE 3-COURSE PROGRAMME

It is proposed that the University transits from the 24-course programme to the 3-course programme in the 2014/ 2015 academic session. This implies that, at the end of second semester 2013/ 2014 academic session, there would be no ENT courses for second semester 200 level to second semester 400 level. Apart from that, ENT 121, 122, 221, and 222 would no longer exist at the end of 2013/ 2014 academic session. The replacements for each of the ENT courses in the 24-course programme are presented in Appendix III.
